What is BYOD?
BYOD, or Bring Your Own Device, is a new trend in education that allows students to bring their personal laptops, ipads, tablets, and smartphones into the classroom to support their educational needs. Mobile devices are commonly seen in the hands of students, even young elementary students. All day, everyday, most of our students are using some sort of device. As they enter their school they are immediately told to turn their device off. When they leave their school building, our students immediately turn their devices back on. So, school is the only place where students are not using their devices. Some schools have begun to capitalize on the trend and incorporate this technology into classroom lesson plans. Throughout this blog I will discuss the various reasons why schools (particularly my own) should embrace the BYOD concept, Learning Management Systems, Challenge Based Learning, the use of Badges, Online Learning Modules in a hybrid classroom, project based learning, digital immigrants and digital natives, and give example policies.
